Parallel Lives “Packs a Universe into One Evening” – Opens May 18
Kathy Najimy and Mo Gaffney’s Two-Woman Comedy is Inaugural Show at Sycamore Mall Space
“If you see only one show this weekend, make it ‘Parallel Lives.’ It’s everything that’s right with local theater.” ~ Iowa Theatre Blog.
The review is in!! Iowa Theatre Blog says “It’s always a delight to see De Luca or Howell perform, and Parallel Lives is no exception. They work extremely well together, feeding off of each other and creating bubbles of comic energy that suddenly burst into showers of despair and sadness. Their interactions, even when silly, are crushingly honest, and it’s rare to see two performers listen to each other so carefully. The timing is impeccable…tireless energy, serious skill, and above all the playful sense of exploration…. Read the full Parallel Lives review!
Fourth Room Theatre will present Kathy Najimy and Mo Gaffney’s hysterical comedy Parallel Lives May 18th and 19th at 7:30 p.m. and May 20th at 2:00 p.m. at the Sycamore Mall.
Based on comediennes Kathy Najimy and Mo Gaffney’s “Kathy and Mo Show,” this Obie Award-winning play features a diverse collection of characters learning about life on Earth while fickle goddesses watch from afar.
Parallel Lives stars local actors Ottavia De Luca and Rachel Korach Howell, both members of Fourth Room Theatre. Throughout the course of the evening, the dynamic duo embody nearly twenty-five characters from Jersey teenagers to country western barflies to celestial beings postulating whether the man or woman should be lucky enough to give birth.
Watching the two actors seamlessly move among various accents, ages and genders from one scene to the next is hysterically funny, and at times, emotional.
“It’s filled with fast-paced changes, but we’re enjoying the challenge,” says DeLuca. “We know the audience is going to have fun meeting these personalities we’ve gotten intimate with during the rehearsal process.”
The performance will be held at the Sycamore Mall, a first for the theater company.
“We are so excited to be performing in this unique and interesting space,” says Howell. “It’s a great collaboration with Sycamore. People can come for dinner, stay for a show and have a drink afterwards. We’re looking forward to bringing live theater to this area of Iowa City.”
Performances of Parallel Lives will be held at the Sycamore Mall, May 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. and May 20 at 2 p.m.
Tickets are available at the door and may be reserved by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
